- The 1996-7 Malcolm Exhibition label text:
Adriaen van de Velde made numerous comparable figure studies in red chalk, building up a stock of motifs for use in his paintings. Characteristically, he here captures an Italianate quality of light, somewhat in the manner of Nicolaes Berchem, but no related picture is known.
The artist was the son and brother of the two marine painters, Willem van de Velde the Elder and the Younger, but unlike them, he tackled all kinds of subject-matter. He was based in Amsterdam, but probably studied under Jan Wijnants in Haarlem. His landscapes include Italian motifs, and he may have travelled there in the mid-1650s.
