- Curator's comments
- Although unsigned, this drawing is clearly by the same hand as 1895,0915.1221. Both sheets are part of a larger group of metalpoint portraits of which four sheets were sold at Sotheby's London, 7 July 1999, lot 14 (as 'Dutch School, early 17th century').
Moreelse's name was associated with such drawings in the 19th century (see C.H. de Jonge, Paulus Moreelse, 1938, nos.27g and 27h).
They have now been attributed to Cripijn de Passe II, due to their relationship with some of his portrait prints. The man portrayed on this sheet appears on a lettered engraving by Passe in which he is identified as Jacob Edelheer; see also O,6.105. A similar drawing in Berlin can be linked to the engraved portrait of Viglius Lumey van der Marck.
