Curator's comments
Though this drawing is mounted with, and has the same provenance as, the Saints Domitilla, Nereus, and Achilleus also in the BM (see 1895,0915.1060) it is not by Rubens’ hand. Instead it should be considered as a copy after Rubens’ preparatory drawing now in the Musée Conde (inv. DE 914). For further comment see 1895,0915.1060. Lit: M. Jaffé, 'Rubens in Italy', 1977, p.98; J. Rowlands, 'Rubens: Drawings and Sketches, exhibition catalogue, London, British Museum, 1977, no.30b; J. Held, 'Selected Drawings', New York, 1986, p.83.
