The drawing is a copy of good quality after a painting, perhaps from the circle of the Bruges painter Jan Provost (c.1465-1529), now in a private collection in New York. The central group of figures is inspired by Rogier van der Weyden's painting of the same subject now in Munich.
The painting from the circle of Jan Provost was sold as lot 73 in the 29 Jan 1998 Christie's sale in London as south Netherlandish school c. 1500-1510. For a reproduction of the painting, see F.
