Princess Helena, Queen Victoria’s third daughter, was born on 25 May 1846. Winterhalter painted a series of portraits of Queen Victoria’s children in their early years, intended to be seen as roundels. This portrait of Helena (born 1846) was painted in March 1849, when the Princess, the Queen’s fifth child and third daughter, was three years old. It is signed and dated but now listed as ‘previously attributed to Winterhalter’. Thomas Fairland, who died of consumption in 1852, reproduced in lithography royal portraits by Winterhalter and Sir William Charles Ross.
