This print served as the title-page to a German translation of the Old Testament, published by F. Peypus, Nuremberg, 1524. Other woodcuts for the book were designed by Hans Springinklee, with whom Schön also collaborated in the 'Hortulus Animae' (1904,0206.26). An armoured figure of Joshua, the war-leader of the Israelites who captured Jericho, is also shown seated on a rock in a woodcut by Hans Cranach (Hollstein, 5a) on the title-page of Martin Luther's first edition of the Old Testament, published in Wittenberg in 1523. Schön's figure is a loose adaptation of Cranach's, but the way in which he has positioned it within an architectural niche partly overlapping the decorative framework comes directly from similar figures on Dürer's 'Triumphal Arch' of 1515-17, for which Schön is thought to have executed a few designs (see C. Dodgson, I, p. 418). His technique of designing woodcuts, with a simplified, more uniform system of hatching, derives from Dürer.
