Curator's comments
From a series of seven plates representing the Seven Wise Men of Greece. The plates were engraved by Couvay (figures; Duplessis attributes them, erroneously, to Rousselet) and Bosse (background). See Bassani, 'Claude Vignon', 1992, pp.360-364, where the set is dated c.1639/40.
