Curator's comments
Although the inscription identifies Bonaparte as Consul, the archetype dates from his years as General of the French Army in Italy and derives from a model created by Jean Guérin. The print was advertised in 'Journal de Paris, 18 January 1801, and in 'Moniteur', 20 January 1801. Plate later altered into a portrait of Napoleon as Emperor, see 1894,0122.140.
