Curator's comments
The plate was executed in 1792, and reworked at a later date making some politically necessary changes from the original state: the Phrygian hat on the Spirit's spear has been erased, and Mirabeau's text has been changed. The concept of the arrival of a modern hero in the Champs Elysées was first popularised in a series of prints by Macret.
