The Rivals: On a terrace, a young woman stands in a group of three men, waving dismissively at a young man standing at right as an older man struggles to retrieve her fan which she has dropped at her feet; illustration to 'The Literary Souvenir' (London, 1826).
Three proof, all cut: on top right with the figures outlined only; on bottom left with sky and area around images unfinished; on bottom right all the engraving and etching finished.

A hand-written pen note in this print names other printmakers that worked on this print. It was a common practice for renowed printmakers to hire others to work on parts of a print. In this case, the print was reduced by Sangster, Widnell did the outline, while W. Taylor etched the background and sky, later redone by Westwood.
