The Bishop Saint Pol de Leon administered the Wilmot Fund (see 1948,0214.369), and was effectively in charge of distributing relief to the French émigré clergy in England. He had arrived in London in late 1791 and was painted by Danloux in September 1792 (Louvre). This engraving was made from the painting in 1797 and distributed by subscription to supporters of the aims of the Fund. The Bishop is shown in his lodgings in Queen Street, Bloomsbury, engaged in the work of raising money from subscribers. At the head of the 'List of Subscribers to the [relief] of the suffering clergy of France' John Wilmot's name is most prominent, followed by the Duke of Portland. The screen shows Winchester Castle which had been given for the accommodation of the clergy.
