Sketchbook half-bound in green leather with gold tooling and marbled boards with 2 paper labels (one pasted over the other) on the front, another on the spine inscribed "John Harris Jun", and a retailer's label on the inside front cover (W.I.Reeves & Son), containing 18 leaves with sketches (including 3 with drawings laid down or tipped in) and 6 blank leaves, interleaved with leaves of tissue paper (6 with sketches and/or inscribed) with topographical views, architectural subjects and landscapes; some sketches on the recto and verso, and others on the inside front covers; the sketchbook has been used from either end; subjects include Gothic architecture and ornament, views of Portsmouth Harbour, Southsea (?), Bristol, Tintern (?) Abbey and the New Bridewell in Tothill Fields (including a study for a lithograph)
Most sketches in graphite (one with watercolour), one in pen and ink over graphite and another in brush and ink, heightened with white, over graphite; some grey and buff leaves

- Curator's comments
- The registration sub-numbers (1-17) are slightly irregular, being allocated to most of the leaves with drawings (omitting three) but including two drawn leaves of tissue paper. The LB numbers do not correspond to these sub-numbers.
The attribution to John Harris (1791-1873) follows an annotation in LB referring to the Times Literary Supplement, 23.i.1919.
