- Curator's comments
- Edward Croft-Murray noted in the margin of the P&D copy of Cust's catalogue, "The leaf is definitely Italian, late XVIIIth century. The sticks probably French." This is now generally agreed.
A fan in the Royal collection (RCIN25073; see George III and Queen Charlotte, exhib. cat., 2004, no. 463), described as Italian, c. 1780, is closely related.
