- This is a private plate, commissioned and paid for as a present by an unidentified friend of the sitter ('amicus ipsi offerebat').The plate must have been engraved in or after 1695 when Edelinck was given the title 'Eques'. Firmin-Didot states that the plate was engraved in 1704, which is entirely plausible both stylistically and on the grounds of the costume, but gives no reason for his dating. Robert-Dumesnil, followed by Firmin-Didot, identifies the sitter with the author, b.1698, d.1768, but this is obviously impossible stylistically and moreover Edelinck died in 1707.
Adrien Claude Le Fort de la Morinière edited an anthology of French verse published in 4 volumes in 1745. Since the sitter is described as Adrien, who died in 1715 and had a son called Claude, it is almost certainly the author's father.
