- Alison Menzies (email July 2020): 'The Greek Revival building, now Grade Two listed, was opened in 1825 as the Library of the Literary and Philosophical Society of Newcastle upon Tyne. It's now known in Newcastle as the Lit & Phil, of which I'm a member. The ancient brick dwelling beside it was demolished in about 1868 to make way for the Institute of Mining Engineers which now occupies that site. In the background Leitch has painted another building still extant. It was designed by Pugin, completed in 1844 as the Catholic Church of St Mary, and in 1850 gained the cathedral status it retains today. However, the tower and spire which Leitch has painted were added only in 1872. By that time the red brick house had been demolished, so the view shown in the painting could never have existed.'
