An earlier pair of portraits of Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette, both dated 1781, are at Lunéville ('Bernard: Portraitiste en trait de plume', exhib. cat., Musée du Chateau, Lunéville, 1994, nos. 9 and 10). Another portrait of Marie-Antoinette, dated 1783 and showing the queen with a marginally less flamboyant coiffure, was offered at auction at Artcuriel, Paris, 27 March 2015, lot 74.

- 1889,0806.8 to 53 were all purchased from William Walker for a total of £49 7s 6d. A few prices have been entered individually. Colvin's report dated 30 July 1889 stated that all of them came from the collection of Lord Ronald Gower.
