- Curator's comments
- The uniform finish of this drawing, and the fact that it is so prominently signed and dated within the image, suggest that it may have been intended for reproduction. The large areas of varied pencil work representing the different textures of tiles, boards and shrubbery are the sort of thing that were common in drawing manuals as examples for learners to copy. This drawing could have been destined for inclusion in a part work, of which large numbers were appearing around this date. This is the only example of such a drawing now known in Girtin's surviving output.
