Preliminary studies for Flaxman's illustrations to Homer's "Iliad"; the top two depict Iris coming home to bid Priam ransom Hector (Plate 33, "Iliad", XXIV, 169), Iris coming from the right, and standing above Priam, who sits with bowed head surrounded by his sons, and below a graphite sketch for Achilles embracing the ghost of Patroclus. c. 1792-1793

- Curator's comments
- The second of the two studies for Iris bidding Priam to ransom Hector is larger than that above and the positions of the two figures on the far right have been modified. In the final engraving the scene is reversed and Priam is shown looking up at Iris. This subject engraved by Thomas Piroli and published by J Matthews, 441 Strand, January 12th, 1795. The engravings are in the department (reg.no 1973,U.1189[1-40]).
