- Curator's comments
- This sheet is in an album of 76 drawings (sketches and 2 tracings) and manuscript notes, laid down on 42 loose portfolio sheets bound as an album in the BM. The drawings in the album relate principally to Hayter's picture of the Coronation of Queen Victoria, commissioned by her (Royal Collection), engraved by Henry Thomas Ryall, with subjects including architectural details, plans, and sketches of Princess Schwarzenberg, Archbishop Howley, the Duchess of Kent, Lord Stafford, Lady Barham, Duke of Bedford, Duke of Devonshire, the Duke and Duchess of Sutherland, Wellington and Marshal Soult. Sir George Hayter was offered the commission less than a week before the event, on 22 June 1838, for a fee of 2,000 guineas. He witnessed the ceremony in Westminster Abbey from the Lord Great Chamberlain’s box, which was above the box occupied by the royal ladies. He sketched a great deal during the ceremony and later returned to the Abbey with his son, Angelo, to draw and measure the parts he needed for the picture. The painting was completed in 1840 and the Queen was delighted with it. The album also includes a newspaper cutting and Hayter's admission ticket to the Coronation.
The drawings are not in register number order. According to the Register, these drawings and others in a similar BM album, with registration numbers 1888,0116.22 (79-137), were originally in two portfolios. An impression of Ryall's engraving is in the Department (P&D 1902,1011.8810)
