- The painting on the easel by Alma-Tadema was first exhibited in the summer exhibition of the Royal Academy of Arts in 1884 (no.245) as 'Hadrian in England, visiting a Romano-British Pottery'. It was subsequently cut up by the artist after August 1886 and the pieces dispersed. See Vern Swanson, 'The Biography and Catalogue Raisonne of the Paintings of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema', (London; Garton & Co, 1990), no.295, pp.223-4.
