- When this was acquired it was incorrectly described in the departmental register as a study for the figure of an angel in the altarpiece of the 'Vow of Louis XIII' (Le Voeu de Louis XIII) dated 1824 in Montauban cathedral, see D. Wildenstein, 'The Paintings of J.A.D. Ingres', London, 1954, no. 155, pl. 64. It is actually a study for the left-hand Amor in the 'Golden Age' painted in 1862 now in the Fogg Museum (Wildenstein no. 301, pl. 87), a small-scale version with many differences for an unfinished mural abandoned in 1850, see 1886,0410.25 for details . The pose of the figure in the Fogg painting, notably the bent right leg, matches that in the BM drawing closely. Three studies for the same figure are at Montauban, G. Vigne, 'Dessins d'Ingres, catalogue raisonné des dessins du musée de Montauban', Paris, 1995, nos. 2073-2075. A study for the same figure in the mural is in the BM: 1921,0614.3.
For a list of all the 'Golden Age' studies in the BM see 1886,0410.25.
