- Curator's comments
- The principal figure on the verso is a study for St. Michael in an altarpiece of SS. Francis Xavier and Michael in the Duomo of Montepulciano, commissioned by Lucrezia di Riccardo Cocconi sometime after 1669. Despite considerable differences with the figure as painted, the studies of God the Father on the recto may have been made for Vanni's Annunciation in the chapel directly opposite the Xavier altarpiece, which was surely executed simultaneously: the two works are stylistically very similar indeed, and as great an affinity exists between the present sheet and a group of undoubted studies for the same Annunciation (see BM 1886,0104.3.96).
The two studies at the bottom of the recto were added separately.
