- Curator's comments
- This sheet was employed for several purposes, most probably during the late 1640s. Such a date is suggested by the robust drawing manner and the rather long, narrow face of the youth on the verso, which recalls Circe’s in the ‘Ulisses and Circe’ (Villa Brandi, Siena) which Angela Negro dated to the 1640s (see A. Lo Bianco ed., 'Pietro da Cortona 1597-1669', exh. cat., Rome, 1997, p. 237), and that of the tambourine player in the ‘Triumph of David’ in the Chigi-Saracini Collection, Siena, which was most probably painted at the end of the same decade (see the entry by L. Galli, in F. Bisogni and M. Ciampolini eds, 'Bernardino Mei e la Pittura Barocca a Siena', Siena, 1987, esp. p. 100). The similar execution of studies for both these pictures in the BM Vanni albums further imply a similarity of date (cfr., for example, 1886,0104.3.299).
