The recto study is preparatory for a background figure the 'Dismissal of Hagar' in a private French collection (see M. Ciampolini, 'Il repertorio sui "Pittori senesi del Seicento" a otto anni dalla uscita, con nuovi disegni e pitture di Raffaello Vanni', in S. Sperindei and G. Martina Weston eds, '"A Tale for Two Cities": Rome and Siena in the Early Modern Period', Pontedera, 2020, pp. 49-50 and fig. 10). Two further studies for the work survive in the BM: see 1886,0104.3.161 and 196. The drawing on the verso is probably connected with Vanni's depiction of 'St Peter Healing with His Shadow' (private collection, formerly Florence, Galleria Pasti Bencini; ill. M. Ciampolini, 'Pittori senesi del Seicento', Siena, 2010, pl. 538).
