- Curator's comments
- Heavily cut down. The verso is filled with preparatory drawings for the figure of S. Bernardino in the 'Last Judgement' Vanni painted for the ceiling of S. Vigilio, Siena sometime after 1634 (ill. A. Angelini and M. Pellegrini eds, 'La chiesa di San Vigilio a Siena: Storia e arte dalle origini monastiche allo splendore dell'età barocca', Florence, 2018, pl. 24; directly below Christ). The recto studies may relate to a scene from the Passion; a similar, standing putto appears in a devotional Crucifix executed by Vanni in 1649 for S. Eugenio a Monastero, and in a compositional study in the BM Vanni albums for an undocumented Lamentation at the Foot of the Cross (BM 1886,0104.3.324). The stylist similarities between the two drawings are such that it is quite possible that they relate to the same project.
