- Curator's comments
- The studies on both recto and verso are preparatory for a 'Death of St Stephen' by Vanni, most recently sold by Pandolfini, Florence, 3 March 2020, no. 97. The recto is devoted entirely to St Stephen himself, while the figures drawn on the verso all form part of the group of onlookers at the far left of the picture. Further studies for the work survive elsewhere in the BM Vanni albums: 1886,0104.3.104 (recto), 1886,0104.3.153 (recto; probable study) and 1886,0104.3.202 (recto and verso). All three sheets were apparently used at a late stage in the design process, containing (with the exception of 1886,0104.3.153) very few divergences from the finished picture. The nude child studied on the verso is closely derived from Raphael's Bridgewater Madonna.
