- Curator's comments
- A study for a fresco of God the Father on the soffit of a side chapel in the Cathedral of Colle di Val d'Elsa, executed by Burbarini for Canon Leonardo Albertani in 1673. The drawing, which is in reverse orientation to the finished fresco, has a slightly dulled surface tone, suggesting that a counterproof has been taken, since disappeared, which would have righted the design for the final work. What limited evidence there is suggests that Burbarini often reversed compositions during the preparatory process: a compositional sketch (Siena, Pinacoteca, dis. 169) for his fresco of 'Pope Alexander III Blessing Frederick I' in the Palazzo Pubblico, Siena, is also in the opposite orientation to the final work.
