- Curator's comments
- All of the drawings on this sheet are studies in reverse for all three Moirai in an allegorcal print designed by Vanni and engraved by Orazio Brunetti, which was apparently made for cardinal 'Enzio' (i.e. Guido?) Bentivoglio (see e.g. Biblioteca Comunale, Siena, F2.I.3., fol. 42r; ill. F. Bisogni and M. Ciampolini eds, 'Bernardino Mei e la Pittura Barocca a Siena', exh. cat., Siena, 1987, p. 104, no. 40; on the link with Bentivoglio see A. Negro, in A. Lo Bianco ed., 'Pietro da Cortona 1597-1669', exh. cat., Rome, 1997, p. 243, n. 44). The recto studies show the upper half of Clotho, holding the bundle of thread (left), and the legs of Atropos (right); the drawing on the verso is preparatory for the standing Lachesis.
For a further study of Atropos and discussion regarding the print's date, see 1886,0104.3.89.
