Popham was the first to observe that this is a study from the fully clothed garzone, or studio model, for the woman attendant on the right in Bandinelli's relief of the 'Birth of the Virgin', of 1518-19, for the Santa Casa at Loreto (Venturi X2, fig. 199). The connection was further strengthened by his observation that the pose is repeated in the figure on the right in a drawing of two female attendants at Coburg (inv. no. Z 2419-K91), which is palpably a study for the two corresponding figures in the relief.
The practice of studying the pose of a female figure from a male model was not unusual; indeed, Bandinelli has not troubled to vary the model's everyday dress since the purpose of the drawing was merely to fix the pose and clarify the stance of the figure.
