- Curator's comments
- This drawing was included in Edward Mead Johnson's catalogue of Cotes' work, 1976 (no. 224). He noted that there were two related pastels and an oil painting that repeated the poses found in this drawing (but without the figure of the Duchess) and suggested a date of c. 1767, found on the oil (Royal Collection). He noted it had been in the Edward Cheney sale and thought the BM had purchased it there on 9th May. This was the date it was registered - the sale was 29 April - 1 May and this drawing was purchased then with three other drawings in lot 298 by Colnaghi's for the BM (for £4.4) with a large group of other drawings.
The pastel of the Queen and Princess (also now in the Royal Collection) was exhibited by Cotes at the Society of Artists in 1767 (32) and engraved by H. Acland and William Wynne Ryland.
