Popham & Pouncey 1950
This is a faithful but incomplete repetition of a drawing in the Louvre (BB 1949; Van Marle, xi, fig. 235, with caption incorrectly stating that it is in the Uffizi). In the Louvre drawing the r.-hand figure is completely visible and there is a study of a r. forearm in the lower r. corner. The inscription recurs on the Louvre drawing in a fuller but still incomplete form; for this sheet, too, has been trimmed. The words inscribed on our drawing are preceded by the statement: "Antonii Jacobi excellentissimi ac eximii florentini pictoris scultorisq prestantissimi hč opus e(st)". In spite of this affirmation of authorship, written in a contemporary hand, both Berenson and Miss Cruttwell, no doubt rightly, refuse to accept the Louvre drawing as a work from the master's own hand. Our version, which is still weaker, is incomprehensibly ascribed by Degenhart to Francesco di Giorgio. Its relationship to other drawings by and after Pollaiuolo is discussed under 1893,0529.1.
