- That this drawing is signed and dated by Flaxman and also annotated with the relevant piece of text from Bunyon's work suggests that this is a finished drawing. David Bindman suggested that the presence of the quotations on finished drawings such as this one may indicate that Flaxman contemplated making an illuminated manuscript of the book (Bindman, 1979, p. 121).
These drawings were not engraved. For further information about Flaxman's designs for "The Pilgrim's Progress" see the curatorial comment to 1862,0308.17.

- Thibaudeau acted as an agent for the British Museum at the Russell sale in December 1884, see 1885,0509.1574-1607 which are described in the Register as 'Purchased at the Russell sale, M. Thibaudeau comm[issioned]'. Some of the other drawings Thibaudeau purchased at the same sale were subsequently sold to the British Museum in 1885; see 1885,0509.33-51 and 1885,0711.271-303.
