Plate 25: Philip IV appoints Prince Ferdinand Governor of the Netherlands; at right Philip IV, flanked by Minerva and Jupiter, rises from his throne to bid farewell to Prince Ferdinand, whom he dispatches to the Spanish Netherlands; Cardinal-Infante Ferdinand, newly appointed governor, holds his commander's baton in his right hand, turning his head to regard the king as he descends the steps; at centre, two allegorical figures bearing emblems of war and peace preceed Ferdinand; at left stands the female personification of Grief, heavily veiled and clasping her hands; kneeling beside her and accompanied by a lion is Belgica, raising her arms and imploring the beneficence of the deceased Infanta Isabella above; the Infanta, seated in the clouds beside the symbolic grouping of a mother and her children, points with approval to her successor Prince Ferdinand; after Peter Paul Rubens; illustration for Gaspar Gevaerts' "Pompa Introitus" (Antwerp, 1641)

- One of a series of forty-three plates illustrating Gaspar Gevaerts' "Pompa Introitus"; for further comments see 1884,0112.31. This etching depicts in detail the principal canvas inserted into the tympanum of the Stage of Isabella (1884,0112.55), dedicated to the memory of Ferdinand's predecessor as the Governor of the Netherlands. The work celebrates Ferdinand's appointment and the promise his succession brings for a newly restored Spanish Netherlands.
