Portrait of an elderly man in profile to the right, gazing sternly through small wire-rimmed spectacles, a sheaf of papers in his hand, and many others in a bulging coat-pocket. He wears old-fashioned dress, short grey hair with a little projecting pigtail, low-crowned hat, coat below the knee showing breeches, wrinkled gaiters on thin ill-shaped legs. He stands on boards, perhaps a platform. March 1824
