- Curator's comments
- The painting, formerly in the collection of the Comte Duchâtel, was bequeathed to the Musée du Louvre in 1878 (inv. R.F. 216) as a painting by Antonis Mor. The right panel, which portrays Antonio del Rio's wife, Léonor Lopez de Villanueva, is also housed in the Louvre (inv. R.F. 217). A restauration performed on both panels in 1977-1979 uncovered religious scenes in the background (namely, a Resurrection of Christ on the left panel and an Ascension of Christ on the right panel) which until then had been covered by a dark ground. This plate therefore shows the painting before the restauration.
