- Curator's comments
- From the end of 1750 to circa 1757, Richard Wilson was living and working in Italy, predominantly in Rome and the Roman campagna. It was during this time that he turned his attention to landscape painting, having previously been a portraitist. A large number of drawings survive from this Italian period; through them we can trace his development from the production of Rococo vedute to the more complex Grand Style landscape scenes. These are demonstrative of the influence on his work of 17th century artists such as Claude Lorrain, as well as the contemporary French artists working in Rome, his plein air practice and his interest in incorporating classical influences into landscape art to raise the genre in the estimation of his 18th century audience. See the curator’s comment for 1881,0212.36 for further details on the present drawing.
