- Curator's comments
- 1879,0614.186 to 217 constitute a set of views of Rome and its surrounds in India paper proofs, for the 1840 publication by Charles Tilt which had a text supplied by Noel Humphreys. This entry covers the 30 plates of the series apart from the two plans of Rome that are separately entered under 1879,0614.187 and 188; a proof of a view of Tivoli is also separately entered under 1879,0614.197+.
The best (but incomplete) description of the book (which is not in the BM) is given by Andres. The plates were engraved by a team of engravers under W B Cooke, who put his name as engraver under most of the plates, and production extended over the years between 1835 and 1840. The titlepage asserted that they were 'from drawings by eminent artists' but the names of these artists were not revealed in the lettering.
