- Curator's comments
- The following is taken from L. Stainton, ‘British Landscape Watercolours, 1600-1860’, 1985, no. 139:
A late example of Cox's Welsh views; here, although executed on a comparatively small scale, he evokes the sombre and almost threatening grandeur of Snowdon. The granular texture and irregularity of the paper enhances the effect of Cox's sponged and scraped areas of steel grey and green: a Sublime interpretation of the landscape that is in a direct line of descent from Turner's 1798-9 Welsh studies (see 1958,0712.405).
The following label was written by Kim Sloan for Places of the Mind, 2017:
'One of the most prolific drawing masters of the first half of the century, Cox spent his summers in Bettws-y-Coed in North Wales from 1844 to 1856. He often gave informal lessons to young artists sketching in the area, most notably George Price Boyce and Arthur William Hunt (in the long run of cases to your right).
Cox used sketches like this as the basis for larger watercolours that still displayed the ‘rough manner’ and ‘vigour’ that critics admired in his works.'
