- Curator's comments
- There has been some contention among scholars on the subject of the authorship of this print. Initially attributed to Bonington by Triqueti and Bouvenne, this was later challenged by Hughes, who noted that the date 1824 was before Bonington's first known trip to Italy in 1826. Curtis, however, accepts Triqueti's attribution due to the similarity in style of this print with the first state of the Bologna print. Noon's research shows that this print is certainly by Boys, who owned the watercolour version, and probably traced from an engraving by Cooke of Bonington's original watercolour. The other soft-ground etchings catalogued by Curtis are also by Boys, after different artists, and include one composition that is probably original. See P. Noon, "Bonington and Boys, some unpublished documents at Yale" in Burlington Magazine, May 1981, pp 294-300.
For Bonington's watercolour version of this image, see Noon, cat.222.
