- Curator's comments
- Luke Herrmann and Andrew Wilton have both suggested that this work might be by William Henry Bunbury. In fact, it appears to be the preliminary study for 'Falstaff at Hearn's Oak', a plate from Macklin's Sakespeare Gallery published in 1793, engraved by Beneditte after Bunbury. An impression of the engraving is in the BM, register number 1865,0610.1015
