Street-scene, in the back streets of a port; a cheerful young fish-seller with a knotted kerchief, standing with his right foot on the step of a house at left, steadying a large basket on his head with his left hand, holding out a smaller basket with his right hand for a sour-faced old housekeeper with a chatelaine to inspect, an old man behind her in the doorway, two cats at the young man's feet, very interested in the fish; behind at right, a thin man walking with a stick, masts just seen above houses beyond. 1823
