- Curator's comments
- The first of 54 humorous coloured etchings originally issued in 1820, published by Leigh as a companion to his book, 'Leigh's New Picture of London'; the majority are street scenes showing street-traders engaged in their professions, or in the act of calling out their 'cries'. This set is bound into the 1823 revised edition; for description of the volume see 1878,0511.713-753. All the etchings in Rowlandson's series have been catalogued individaully, but for a group record, see also 1878,0511.659-712.
This print is here used as a frontispiece to the set, following the frontispiece, titlepage and table of contents to the 'New Picture of London'. It is opposite a letterpress titlepage for the 'Characteristic Sketches', lettered: 'Rowlandson's Characteristic Sketches of the Lower Orders, intended as a companion to the New Picture of London: consisting of fifty-four plates, neatly coloured. / London: Printed for Samuel Leigh, 18, Strand. / Price 7s. half-bound.'; on the verso, printer's line: 'London: W. Clowes, Northumberland-court.' An advertisement following the titlepage states that 'This collection may be had bound, with Leigh's New Picture of London, price 15s.' The titlepage of the 'New Picture', meanwhile, describes this series as 'Rowlandson's fifty-four Costumes'.
