- Curator's comments
- From an album of two hundred and thirty-two drawings made by George Keate on a tour of France, Italy and Switzerland from 1754-56. For a full description and comment, see 1878,0209.106 (which is the title page, drawn by Robert Adam).
The battle of Murten took place in 1476 and was one of the Burgundy battles that took place between Charles the Bold of Burgundy and the Swiss. Charles' aim was to expand Burgundy into a territory streching from the North Sea to the Alps. The Battle of Murten saw the Burgundians defeated by the Swiss in an unexpected attack and a great number were lost. As a result Charles the Bold was significantly weakend and fell to his death during the Battle of Nancy which followed in January 1477. The battles that took place between Charles the Bold and the Swiss enabled Switzerland to maintain its independence.
