A soldier stands at attention in profile to the left. holding his musket with fixed bayonet. A long pigtail hangs from short, shaggy hair. He wears a pointed cap tilted over his eyes, military coat, and jack-boots. On his back is a variety of objects, including a flask, a pouch, a leg of mutton, and (?) a turkey. 1 August 1778
