- Text from Antony Griffiths & Frances Carey, 'German Printmaking in the Age of Goethe', BM 1994, no. 9 :
Andresen catalogued these twelve etchings (See: 1877,1013.749; 1877,1013.753-759; 1877,1013.761-764) as two distinct sets. But the first plate which carries the text "Achetter mes pettites eau forties" (buy my little etchings) continues "f a la 12m" - which means that the price was for twelve prints. Huber and Rost II p.233 recognised that they form a single set, and this is reliable evidence since Huber spent these years in Paris in Wille's circle before moving to Leipzig.
Both these groups of prints play humorously with existing genres of printmaking. Thus there is a tradition of etched sheets of studies of unconnected parts of the human body made for drawing books that goes back to the sixteenth century, as well as a tradition of 'têtes d'expression'.
Schenau introduces a narrative element that links the heads with each other. The (barely legible) texts below in German 'Kurrentschrift' tell a tale. In plate 1 the text translates 'The old man "I honour", the young maiden "I love"'; in plate 2 'If you hide yourself, you are in love, I am too', and so on.
