Description
Magdalena Poenitens; the figure of Mary Magdalene sits under several tree trunks reading the Bible at lower right; beyond opens a panoramic landscape with cliffs and mountains extending to the right and a precipitous drop to the flat plain of a river valley to the left; on the banks of the river, a large fortified town and at the top of the cliffs to the right perches a monastery with the ascending Magdalen in an aureole above; a figure riding a donkey makes his way along a road which leads from the right foreground through a forest up toward the mountains beyond; second state with plate reworked; after Pieter Bruegel the Elder. c.1555 Etching and engraving
