Curator's comments: There is an almost identical drawing in the National Portrait Gallery, London - NPG 1371 - which is unattributed and undated. This latter drawing is marginally larger than that in the BM collection and is executed in chalks. Inscribed under the image is "David Roberts" and "Henry Hoppner Meyer" (these seemingly in different hands), the latter inscription in the same place as the same words appear on the BM drawing. See 1871,0812.1807.+ for an extensive discussion of the attribution history of this drawing.
