Likely to be an illustration to an edition of Captn Alexander Smith's (pseud.) 'History of the Lives of the Most Notorious Highwaymen'. First published in 1714, this bestseller was republished with a variety of titles. A plate after the same design engraved by B.Cole was published in a 1742 edition (as Captn Charles Johnson's (pseud.) "A General and True History of the Lives and Actions of the most Famous Highwaymen, Murderers, Street-Robbers, &c...", R. Walker, Birmingham 1742).
