- Curator's comments
- The attribution of this print to the Monogrammist IQV was made by Catherine Jenkins in 2002.
This print is one of four etchings by the Monogrammist IQV of the Prophets and Sibyls from Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel ceiling. They are some of the first known prints produced after these Sistine figures, other early examples being Enea Vico's 'Isaiah' (c. 1546; Bartsch XV.286.11) and Nicolas Beatrizet's 'Jeremiah' (before 1547; Bartsch XV.244.10). For further examples see Jenkins 2017. In his four etchings the Monogrammist IQV focuses on the monumental figures while providing few contextual details. The Libyan Sibyl aside (IQV.35), the surrounding painted architecture is minimally alluded to and generally appears as flat areas of hatching. It has not been possible to identify the precise models for these prints. Jenkins 2017.
