Preparatory study for the full-length portrait in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
The same formal view of the head was used in the half-length portrait - which also includes the hound but in a different pose - in the Iveagh Bequest, Kenwood. The Duke must have sat for Van Dyck on at least one other occasion, for the portrait with head turned to the left, now in the Louvre, Paris.
Stuart, who succeeded his father as Duke of Lennox in 1624, was created Duke of Richmond by Charles I, of whom he was a loyal supporter. He received the Order of the Garter in 1633, which may have occasioned this commission for a full-length formal portrait. Stylistically, both painting and related drawings must in any case date from the middle of that decade.
